Welcome to our latest newsletter, which this month includes details of new contracts in Glasgow and Manchester, the addition of SmartLoops to our Plus⁺ traffic control range and the achievement of a major milestone in our work to install rapid EV charge points in Coventry.

Major traffic equipment and maintenance contract

Glasgow City and West Dunbartonshire Councils have awarded us a new, five-year contract which covers the maintenance of over 1,000 items of traffic equipment across an area of nearly 130 square miles. Covering Glasgow and many of the city's commuter towns and villages, the contract also includes the design and installation of new and replacemenet traffic systems, as well as the associated civil engineering works.

For the past ten years we have provided high levels of service and support across the region and will continue to deliver improvements in the technology, sustainability and reliability of the equipment to benefit both the Councils and road-users.

Our local field services team will maintain and modernise the existing infrastructure. For excample, by replacing the old Halogen lamps in traffic signals with LED technology to provide a more energy-efficient and cost-effective system, as well as looking to introduce our latest Plus⁺ traffic control solution for any new or upgrade works.

Hosted solutions for TfGM

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the latest local government body and Siemens Mobilty customer to migrate their existing urban traffic control system to our hosted solution, UTC-UX.

Our hosted solutions have proved to be invaluable during the last 12 months of lockdown restrictions, enabling local authority staff to work remotely, securely and seamlessly via a simple internet browser, keeping the UK's roads open and safe for key workers.

The new hosted UTC-UX will cover TfGM's existing sites, providing a future-proofed solution for the authority and an ideal platform to support a variety of innovation developments and trials, some including Connected Mobility concepts. As with all our hosted solutions, full operational support and maintenance services will be provided by our Operational Services experts, based in Poole. TfGM also employ our Stratos traffic management and control system, with the Traffic Signals module and InView providing a fully hosted solution for both network control and fault management.

New SmartLoops deliver a step change in performance

Following the introduction of the Plus⁺ traffic control solution, we have now introduced Plus⁺ SmartLoop detectors. SmartLoops provide significant benefits to both local authorities and road users. By distributing the loop intelligence, they avoid the need to wire each individual loop back to the controller, significantly reducing the amount of cabling and civil engineering works required - and minimising disruption to road users and pedestrians.

The new SmartLoop node provides four channel loop card functionality in a sealed unit, located close to the loops and connected to the nearest Plus⁺ RAG node via a two pair cable power and communications spur. Integrated Bluetooth facilities also allow SmartLoop modules to be easily configured without having to physically access individual loops and their status can be easily interrogated from the Plus⁺ controller directly.

Rapid EV Chargers operational in Coventry

A network of 40 Siemens Mobility rapid EV chargers is now fully installed and operational in Coventry, providing a network of charge points across the city.

In partnership with ESB EV Solutions, the network will allow electric taxis, cars and vans to get moving quickly, picking up a significant charge in less than 30 minutes (depending on the type of vehicle). The Siemens Mobility QC45 rapid chargers all feature contactless payment terminals which can accept both card and phone contactless payments to make their use as fast and easy as possible.
