Welcome to our latest e-newsletter, which this month includes the highlights of a busy period for our teams right across the business. Among a wide range of stories, we have news of the first installation of our SmartLoop detectors with the Plus+ system, the start of Living Lab trial sites for our FUSION adaptive traffic control system in London, Zephyr air quality sensors in Oxford and HOTA certification for our SafeZone system.

As we approach the end of an extraordinary year, we would like to thank you for your continued support during 2020 and wish you a happy and healthy break over the holiday period.

Plus+ scheme incorporates SmartLoop detection

Following the introduction of our new Plus+ traffic control solution, we have now commissioned the first scheme to feature our new Plus+ SmartLoops.

As part of a signalling upgrade scheme for West Berkshire Council, Plus+ with SmartLoop technology has been installed at a narrow swing bridge which crosses the Kennet and Avon canal in Theale. The installation also integrates MOVA technology to optimise traffic flow and control the bridge's traffic signals.By distributing the loop intelligence, SmartLoops avoid the need to wire each individual loop back to the controller, reducing the amount of cabling and civil engineering works required and disruption for road users.

SmartLoop functionality delivers further Plus+ benefits both in installation time and material savings, all of which adds up to a significant cost saving and a step change in the way traffic signals are installed.

First deployment of FUSION adaptive traffic control solution.

Following the launch in September of Sitraffic FUSION, our all-new adaptive traffic control solution, the first operational deployment of the system is now live, with FUSION installed at a Living Lab trial site in London.

Selected to represent typical traffic conditions, the Living Lab will enable the system's features to be verified in a real world, real time environment, as well as providing a solid basis for the system's continuous evolution and development in advance of a wider roll-out across London.

FUSION is a key part of London's Real Time Optimiser (RTO) system, which will provide a completely new way of managing roads across the city. With flexible, policy-driven adaption techniques, FUSION improves on the SCOOT philosophy of minimising vehicle delay and stops, by optimising signalised junctions and pedestrian crossings based on all road users' needs.

Latest evolution of SafeZone receives HOTA approval

We are delighted to have received Home Office Type Approval (HOTA) for the latest evolution of our SafeZone average speed enforcement solution. This recent certification means that evidence from this feature-rich version of SafeZone is fully admissible in court for offences under the Road Traffic Offenders Act, 1988.

With this latest SafeZone system, we have an average speed enforcement that leads the market in terms of security, image quality, capture rates and system performance. The certification covers a number of key new SafeZone features, including day/night mode functionality, which enables the camera to operate without the need for intrusive, additional lighting to be installed.

Based on ANPR technology, SafeZone incorporates our latest Sicore II camera to provide accurate and effective speed enforcement. Manufactured in our UK factory, Sicore II uses the latest HD camera sensors designed specifically for the traffic environment. It provides unrivalled results and evidentially secure identification in all conditions, day and night at vehicle speeds of up to 300kph (186mph).

Air quality sensors installed in live labs

We have installed ZephyrS air quality sensors across the Thames Valley for the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport's (ADEPT) SMART Places Live Labs programme.

The labs will see smart communication technology being integrated with established infrastructure to provide a multi-modal view of real-time traffic movements. This will include air quality data from EarthSense ZephyrS sensors, with these high specification, compact air quality sensors measuring a range of pollutants, as well as temperature and humidity in real-time.

Data from the sensors will be fed back to the EarthSense MyAir® data web app and our Stratos traffic management applications, enabling public health exposure models to be produced and informing transportation, environmental and planning projects and strategies.

Clean air solution for Portsmouth and ULEZ expansion achieves major milestone

Portsmouth City Council is the latest UK city to choose Siemens Mobility's Clean Air Zone technology, with the award of the contract to design a CAZ to the south west side of the city. The solution will use our Sicore II automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera monitoring and enforcement technology to improve air quality.

We have also achieved a major milestone in our work to support the expansion of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), with the 250th new Sicore II camera having just been installed.

Set to be introduced in October 2021, the expanded zone will include all roads bounded by London's North and South Circular roads and represents an area 19 times largert than the current zone. In total, we will be installing 750 new cameras in phases over the coming months.
